Kaizen enhanced the organizational development and health of the USAID/Uganda Mission.

The USAID Organizational Development Activity (ODA) in Uganda was designed to strengthen USAID/Uganda’s internal relationships, systems, capacities, practices, and culture to improve organizational performance that contributes to development advancements for the Ugandan people. To reinforce USAID/Uganda’s progress toward this goal, Kaizen accelerated progress toward optimal organizational health. Together with USAID/Uganda, Kaizen defined organizational health as “USAID/Uganda’s ability to align around a clear vision, strategy, and culture; to execute with excellence; and to renew the Mission’s focus over time in response and anticipation of dynamic Ugandan and internal contexts.”

Highlights

  • Facilitated sessions to engage staff and aid team cohesion
  • Reviewed and recommended improvements to the new staff presentation
  • Provided offboarding tools to enable knowledge capture of departing staff

The ODA supported three offices—the Office of Financial Management (OFM), the Democracy, Rights, and Governance Office (DRG), and the Education, Youth, and Child Development Office (EYCD)—to design surveys and interpreting the resulting data to inform team development calendars within the offices. Kaizen partnered with two local subcontractors to ensure the mission’s activities achieved their intended results.

Kaizen supported several Mission offices and teams to define and monitor progress on annual strategic objectives by:

  • Providing individual coaching to Office of Health and HIV/AIDS staff and a program office team leader to support their effectiveness in their roles
  • Delivering a supplemental guide to support Mission staff assigned to the “Cultural Buddy” role and ease the transition of new staff

Distributed the monthly “Compass” newsletter, including a leader’s message, to all Mission staff to enhance communication and transparency from leadership to employees.
